What is Law?


Besides being financially lucrative, Law is an adventurous and thrilling career option. Consequently, the degree equips you, not just to be an accomplished lawyer but also a businessman, bureaucrat, diplomat, social activist or academician. It goes without saying that financially, the profession is hugely rewarding.


Generally it’s a male–dominated field, but prospects for women are now-a-days improving in legal firms, corporate houses as legal advisors. Specialization in a single focused branch, there are short diploma courses. To practice, it is mandatory to put in a year’s internship.


What makes you a demanding lawyer?


Good intellectual ability, the ability to assimilate and analyze facts quickly, excellent communication and presentation skills, self confidence, and physical and mental stamina to cope with the long hours of work and work related stress. 1,200 to 1,500 lawyers enroll every year.


What after Law?

 

One can opt for careers as:

  1. Civil Law: Deals with issues of private rights of individuals, handling damage suits, breach of contract suits, drawing deeds, wills, mortgages, acting as trustee or guardian, etc.

  3. Tax Law: has a tuned in focus on income tax, estate tax, real tax, franchises, problems of inheritance, etc.
  4.  

  5. Criminal Law: Deals with offences against society or state. It involves interviewing clients and interrogating witnesses, correlating findings, conducting trials, preparing a case for defense, cross examining in court and so on.
  6.  

  7. Corporate Law: Deals with advising corporations on their legal rights, obligations, privileges; studying statutes, constitutions and ordinances; and, helping the corporations to make the all-important decision of whether to go in for a suit at all.
  8.  

  9. International Law: Specializes on treaties, customs and traditions observed by nations in their relations with one another.
  10.  

  11. Labor Law: Deals with workers, their associations, working conditions, workers’ rights and duties, etc. It involves sorting out issues between management and employees in firms.
  12.  

  13. Real Estate Law: Covers conveyance of property, search records and deeds to establish titles of property; acting as trustee for property; and, drawing up legal documents for deeds and mortgages.
  14.  

  15. Patent Law: Focuses on securing patents for inventors from the patent’s office. Specialization in prosecuting or defending patent infringement and preparing detailed specifications of the patent and so on.
